Doula

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Family Education/Support Coordinator and within the policies and procedures of the Columbia Center, the doula provides continuous emotional and physical support for a woman in labor and her immediate family. This support spans the duration of the labor and during the postpartum period.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth.
  • Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor.
  • Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions.
  • Facilitates communication between the laboring postpartum woman, her partner and clinical care providers.
  • Provides emotional and physical comforts to the woman during the first two hours following birth.
  • Reinforces breastfeeding education.
  • Adheres to DONA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Membership in DONA
  • DONA certification as a birth doula required, or complete DONA certification within one year of hire
  • Six months related experience
  • Personable in all interactions
  • Demonstrated respect of confidential information
