Doula
Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Family Education/Support Coordinator and within the policies and procedures of the Columbia Center, the doula provides continuous emotional and physical support for a woman in labor and her immediate family. This support spans the duration of the labor and during the postpartum period.
Responsibilities:
- Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth.
- Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor.
- Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions.
- Facilitates communication between the laboring postpartum woman, her partner and clinical care providers.
- Provides emotional and physical comforts to the woman during the first two hours following birth.
- Reinforces breastfeeding education.
- Adheres to DONA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Membership in DONA
- DONA certification as a birth doula required, or complete DONA certification within one year of hire
- Six months related experience
- Personable in all interactions
- Demonstrated respect of confidential information
