Oh, Baby – We Partied!
By Candy Casey, Columbia Center President & CEO
On Sunday, October 10, 2010, Columbia Center welcomed parents, children and staff members to their Family Reunion event. The event celebrated three years of family additions at Columbia Center in Mequon. The Columbia Center Family Reunion featured two bounce houses for the kids and the Green Bay Packer game for football fans. Families enjoyed a catered lunch while catching up with the Columbia Center staff and physicians.
The guests also got a sneak peek at the new amenities that will be available to moms soon.

Columbia Center would like to thank all the families, staff and physicians that attended the event and made it such a special memory.
To view photos from the Family Reunion, visit the slide show on the Columbia Center website.

Vitamin D for Infants
By Dr. Daniel Hagerman, Pediatrics

With all the news reports about the importance of Vitamin D for the development of strong bones, new moms often ask if they should give their baby a Vitamin D supplement. My answer is, yes, if you are breastfeeding, and I hope that you are. Breastmilk is the best form of infant nutrition.

Vitamin D is important for building and maintaining healthy bones. It also serves as an important antioxidant and supports a healthy immune system. Vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets, a disease that causes weak bones and bowed legs.

Vitamin D is naturally produced with exposure to the sun. About 10 minutes of sunshine three times a week is usually all that is needed. Vitamin D deficiency is rare in the United States, however, for exclusively breastfed babies, vitamin D supplementation is recommended. Providing a Vitamin D supplement is a way to ensure your breastfed baby is getting enough Vitamin D.

The healthiest feeding option for your baby is breastmilk plus a vitamin D supplement, so your baby can get all of the other benefits of breastfeeding. You can purchase over-the-counter liquid multivitamins, such as Poly-vi-sol or D-vi-sol (Vitamin D only), which are given daily with a dropper. Formula fed babies don’t need extra Vitamin D since all infant formulas are fortified.

This app gives parents information from PARENTING magazine's popular feature "Ages and Stages." Taking articles from past issues of the magazine on a variety of parenting topics from pregnancy through the school years, it gives parents instant access to much advice.

The parent can also customize the information to meet their child's (children's) age. It's a lot in a little app and it's free!

Mary Maechtle, RN
Columbia Center nurse Mary Maechtle, RN, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Since her passing, colleagues and friends have been sharing their memories of the warmth, compassion and other positive traits Mary brought to Columbia Center.

Ann Grauer, Columbia Center doula and childbirth educator, called Mary "exceptional" and remembered the first time she met Mary. "She was working at the tent at the Strawberry Festival. I can see her standing there, sunburned nose, sun glasses propped on her head, laughing at her partner in crime, Kathie. That mischievous twinkle in her eye made me like her right away. She was a delight and a warm, caring person. I know we are a little less sunny today with out her."
Nurse Sharon Volkmann remembers first meeting Mary. "I began my friendship with Mary when I oriented her to Labor & Delivery at St. Michael's Hospital a long time ago. Working with Mary was so neat. She had such a great sense of humor, and always had such a realistic way of looking at things. Her smile was so full, and that twinkle in her eye Ann talked about came with the smile!!"

Jessica Hawk, another colleague, saw Mary as an example of what nursing should be. "She was quick with responses to anything from patient needs, to a coworkers joke. I am thankful to have worked with her and been a witness to her amazing role as a nurse. She always wore a smile no matter how she felt – and in the greater spec of things. She truly had earned her wings ..."
