Mommy Moments: Birthdays have new meaning for new mom

May 23, 2008

Sini Mulloy has a new appreciation for birthdays. When she celebrated her birthday earlier this year, she was pregnant and that got her thinking about her own mother. “I thought to myself that this is the anniversary of the day my mother was giving birth. Now my new tradition is to call my mom on my birthday and celebrate her special day.”

For Sini, birthdays are now all about being a mother. In February, Sini gave birth to a beautiful “cappuccino-colored” baby boy with big brown eyes and a head full of black hair. She and her husband Paul named him Dhilon.

Sini’s mother helped her take care of Dhilon when Sini went back to work. When Sini had to travel to Spain for her work, she knew she was leaving Dhilon in good hands. “Both my parents cried when they had to give Dhilon back. He is the first grandchild on both sides, so he is definitely the center of attention. His grandparents shower him with love.”

Sini has been participating in Columbia Center’s breastfeeding support group and new parents group. “Ann and Diane have been very supportive and have helped me get answers to my questions,” Sini says about Ann Grauer and Diane Oakland of Columbia Center’s Parent Education and Support team. They helped Sini figure out the logistics of how to continue breastfeeding while needing to travel for work.

Sini has since decided to quit her demanding job in order to spend more time with Dhilon. “It’s amazing to see each new thing he does, when he holds on to my hand, tracking me with his eyes as I move around the room. It’s a joy to see him pass these milestones.”

Sini is taking good care of herself too. “I was back out walking after four weeks and began running at six weeks.”

Motherhood suits her well.
