Just Ask: What is a Birth Doula?
March 31, 2008
A birth doula is an experienced, trained birth companion who provides non-medical support to women and their partners during childbirth. The doula’s role is to give emotional, physical and informational support to the family. She does not tell the family what to do or make decisions on their behalf. At Columbia Center, we are very fortunate to have excellent nurses and physicians to care for you and your baby. Our doula program was developed to complement the fine care that they provide.
We are proud that all of our doulas are trained by DONA International, the world’s leading doula association. Ours is the first and, currently, only hospital-based doula program in Wisconsin. What’s more, Columbia Center pays 75% of the $300 cost of doula services. And we have a Doula Fund for anyone who cannot afford the $75 fee, making doula support affordable for all those who desire it.
To get acquainted with our doulas, join us for our monthly Meet the Doulas gatherings.
